Utility Assistance in Louisville
Jul 10, 2025 03:38PM ● By Marie Lewis
Many people in Louisville are struggling to keep up with rising utility bills. It’s not just you.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 data, nearly 29% of Louisville households spend more than 30% of their income on housing costs, including utilities. That means almost 1 in 3
families may be living paycheck to paycheck with little room for emergencies. Utility shutoffs can happen fast, and catching up once you fall behind can feel impossible.
The good news is you don’t have to figure this out alone. There are organizations right here in our community offering real help with water, gas, and electric bills. Whether you need short-term support or ongoing assistance, there are options.
Places That Can Help
Organizations like Community Ministries offer help for families in danger of losing water, gas, or electric services. They serve different zip codes and can assist not only with utilities but also

with food and rent. For example, South Louisville Community Ministries and St. Matthews Area Ministries often help neighbors directly—sometimes faster than government programs. LG&E also has programs for people who’ve fallen behind. The WeCare Program provides free energy-saving home improvements. They also offer bill arrangements and budget billing to help you manage costs over time.
Don’t Overlook Insurance Support
Some insurance companies and Medicaid providers also offer help with utilities or rent during emergencies, especially for families with children, seniors, or people with medical needs. For example, certain Medicaid Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) like Humana Healthy Horizons may connect members with housing or utility assistance programs as part of their care coordination services. If you’re enrolled in a Medicaid plan or receive disability benefits, it’s worth calling your provider to ask if you qualify for extra support. These resources are often underused but can make a big difference.
