College Readiness

How Louisville is Helping Students Get College-Ready

Getting ready for college can be confusing. Between figuring out how to pay for it, choosing the right school, and making sure you’ve taken the right classes, it’s a lot to manage. But here in Louisville, there are programs that are making that process easier for students and families.

Whether you’re in middle school just starting to think about your future or in high school wondering how to afford college, these programs are designed to guide you, support you, and open doors.

Cardinals Rising: Starting Early with Support
Cardinals Rising works with students in grades 8 through 12. It’s more than just college talk, they walk students through real steps, like setting goals, understanding how college works, and learning what to expect when they get there. The goal is to make sure students don’t just go to college but feel ready when they do.

Evolve502: Scholarships and Resources for Louisville Youth
Evolve502 is a community-led effort to remove barriers to higher education. They offer scholarships that cover tuition for many students, which can take a huge burden off families. But they go beyond scholarships. Evolve502 connects students to tutoring, mentoring, and mental health services to make sure they’re supported along the way.

Waggener’s College NoW Program: Earning College Credit in High School
Waggener High School offers a program that lets students earn more than 30 college credit hours before they graduate. Through partnerships with UofL, UK, WKU, Campbellsville, and JCTC, students can take college-level courses in areas like English, Math, Nursing, Psychology, and even Law. This means students can start college ahead of the game and save money on tuition.

Louisville Free Public Library (LFPL): Free Test Prep for All Ages
The library might not be the first place you think of when it comes to college prep, but LFPL offers free help for all kinds of tests. Whether you’re taking the ACT, SAT, GED, TOEFL, or nursing exams, they’ve got practice materials and online tools to help you prepare. And it’s all free.

It Takes a Village

College readiness doesn’t have to be stressful or out of reach. These programs are just a few of the ways Louisville is stepping up to support students and families. If you’re a parent, student, or caregiver looking for help getting started, know that resources are out there, and you don’t have to figure it out alone.
