Elite Minds Academy

 Located at 4200 Bishop Lane, Elite Minds Academy provides before and after-school care for children ages 1 to 12. Open from 6:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, the program offers homework help, engaging activities, and outdoor play in a safe environment.

Seeds of Freedom Learning Collective

At Seeds of Freedom, education takes root in faith and wellness. Their program combines academic and STEAM instruction, mental wellness and therapeutic support, and family restoration initiatives, nurturing the whole child. With a focus on spiritual identity, emotional growth, and leadership, the center embodies the idea that learning extends beyond textbooks. Jefferson County CEP YMCA School-Age Child Care

Serving K–8th graders, the YMCA offers before-school care starting at 7:00 a.m. and afterschool programming until 6:00 p.m., along with full-day care during most school breaks and snow days. Their programs balance academics, creativity, and fun through themed enrichment, physical activity, and field trips, all built around the Y’s core values. The Cabbage Patch Settlement House

 Through mentorship, tutoring, and recreation, The Cabbage Patch offers an afterschool program Mon-Fri 2:00-8:00 pm that empowers young people to reach their full potential. Neighborhood House

The Dreamers’ Academy at Neighborhood House serves students K–12 with afterschool care from 2:30–7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Youth receive nutritious snacks, tutoring, and access to rotating classes in Dance, Martial Arts, Art, Science, and Photography, all for a $25 fee. All It Takes: Training & Tutoring

Held every Monday from 4:00–6:00 p.m. at 314 Wenzel St., Cable Missionary Baptist Church, this free program blends tutoring with basketball skills training. New Life Church – Hot Dogs & Homework

This faith-based outreach program combines community, care, and education, giving students a chance to eat, unwind, and get academic help in a friendly and safe environment. The program offers homework assistance and specialized tutoring for children in 1st–8th grade, along with a small “Hotdog” meal. Hot Dogs & Homework meets on Wednesdays from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m., providing a warm, supportive space for students to learn and connect.  Wishing Well After-School Program

The Wishing Well After-School Cohort at West End Schools offers mentorship, skill-building, and hands-on creative learning opportunities designed to empower students through positive, trauma-informed engagement. Now in its second year, the program features four specialized cohorts, Creative Arts, Videography/Photography, 3D Design, and Entrepreneurship, each focused on helping youth strengthen confidence, leadership, and teamwork while developing real-world skills in business, craftsmanship, and the creative industries.  CTRL The Narrative 

 The CTRL The Narrative after-school program offers an arts-based media and storytelling experience that empowers youth to shape and share their own stories. Designed to equip students with creative tools, cultural grounding, and critical thinking skills, the program helps participants examine and challenge harmful media messages while reclaiming ancestral wisdom.

Through a partnership between Play Cousins Collective and AMPED, students take part in a six-week program filled with music creation, storytelling, art design, and community-centered projects that celebrate identity and voice. Meeting Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at the Baxter Community Center, the program begins the week of October 20 and is free for students in grades 6–8. More than just an afterschool activity, CTRL The Narrative provides a safe, inspiring space for young people to build confidence, creativity, and pride through storytelling. National and Local Support for Afterschool Programs

Nationally, the importance of afterschool programs continues to gain recognition. USHER recently joined the call to “Keep the Lights On Afterschool!” as part of the 26th annual Lights On Afterschool celebration, taking place on October 23, 2025. 

Launched in 2000, Lights On Launched in 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event dedicated to celebrating afterschool programs and their vital role in the lives of children, families, and communities. Organized by the Afterschool Alliance, the initiative highlights how these programs give students opportunities to explore new interests, from science and robotics to Tae Kwon Do, poetry, and community service, while developing essential life skills. Each year, the campaign serves as a powerful reminder that millions more children across the country need access to quality afterschool programs.

Locally, The Prophecy Foundation is joining the movement to support Lights On Afterschool by encouraging the community to wear blue and yellow on October 23, 2025. Their participation helps shine a spotlight on the essential role afterschool programs play in keeping kids safe, inspired, and engaged beyond the classroom.

Mizizi Afterschool Program

 Mizizi, which means “roots of a plant,” is Play Cousins Collective’s afterschool program dedicated to helping youth grow strong and confident in who they are. Through creative outlets like poetry, music, art, and reading, Mizizi focuses on identity building and expanding the human experience from many perspectives. The program encourages communication, understanding, and self-advocacy while giving every child a voice. Activities are child-led, allowing students to take on the role of “teacher” and build independence and autonomy. Mizizi challenges stereotypes by celebrating individuality and emphasizing that every child’s experience matters. Open to students in grades 1–6, the program runs Monday through Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. throughout the school year (following the JCPS calendar).
